The present study was conducted to examine differences in the activation of human oocytes by electrical pulse versus the calcium ionophore.
The oocytes were activated electrically 30 min after ICSl.Oocytes, suspended in a phosphate-buffered saline were placed between two parallel electrodes in an electric chamber, and were subjected to a single, square DC pulse. Stimulated oocytes were immediately transferred back to HTF medium. The oocytes were exposed to A23187 for 30 min immediately transferred back to HTF medium.
Seven hundred forty-one ICSI cycles were included in the study. The fertilization rate by was statistically significantly higher in the electro activated group as compared with in the the calcium ionophore（71% vs 48%）. The oocyte degeneration rate was not statistically significantly different between the two groups（17% vs 28%）.
The electric pulse activation seems to be more useful method than Calcium ionophore in cases of repeated failed fertilization after ICSI.
